"Loneliness expresses the pain of being alone and solitude expresses the glory of being alone," according to Paul Tillich.
It’s a cliché, but you can be lonely in a crowd. Those of us fortunate to live in a modern world can treasure solitude and parts of our life when we find ourselves living alone, while having the comfort of radio, television, friends and family only a second away on the internet, life going on about us where we live… I am pretty certain I would not like a solo trek to the south pole or life on a remote farm.
