Towards public honesty and trust

Towards public honesty and trust

******

I was amazed by what I saw

as we walked back to our hotel

Along an empty street was a newsstand

magazines covered with a plastic sheet

to protect from rain?

Won’t somebody

just pick one or two home?

Without paying?

That was three decades ago in Yokohama.

********

Last week I saw

a florist stall in a local mall

“Take your pick (of flowers) and

drop your money in the box here.

Any further question,

please call this number!”

I was again very pleased and amazed

that this public trust

has finally arrived at our shore!

  1. I was just as amazed to see it in Vienna almost 50 years ago: people picked up newspapers and put money in a box next to the stand.

At the florist, the sign in Russian reads “Bouquet without reason.” I thought it was endearing.

    1. Public honesty and trust culture begins with civilization and community indirect enforcement and approval? And perhaps public cctv monitoring…
