Finally, a son after eight daughters!

Finally, a son after eight daughters!

Sr Rosemary told us her experience with this hawker lady!

Gender preferences – daughter or son?

*********

A hawker wife burst out crying out loudly in the labour room. “My mother-in-law said she would make my husband marry another woman if I deliver another girl!  This is my eighth daughter!  I want to die! “

Sister Rosemary taught her the mucus method of family planning. And the hawker’s wife finally got a son!

In many traditional families, gender preference for a male offspring can not be undermined!

  1. My Mom delivered five males (and a 6th stillborn male) before she finally had two daughters. She was smart to persevere because my two sisters were the two children who took primary care of her in her old age.

    1. Very true. Usually, daughters will take care of their parents, although much preferences have been given to the male offspring, at least among the local Chinese whom I know. .

      1. I was a first born male and my sisters did complain that I was not helping enough. My Mom told them, “No one wants to eat Geoff’s cooking.” We all knew she felt more comfortable with her daughters around her for a variety of good reasons.

It’s interesting that these gender preferences still persist in many cultures. I do see a shift coming though and it’ll take generations to move on from this preference.

    1. I was told some traditions need a male to lead important prayers like funerals.

      1. True. In Judaism, we have no gender birth preference and celebrate the birth of boys and girls equally. However, all prayers are led by males, and the reason for it is physiological, rather than discriminatory.
