How painful is pain?

How painful is pain?

We visited a rural hospital. A young boy sat upon a bed with a cast on his right swollen foot. His sad and tearful face looked up as the team approached his bed.
“Sakit? (Pain?)”
He nodded his head and pointed to his foot.
The pain scores were charted as ‘2’ the whole day. (‘0′ means no pain, ’10’ means extreme pain according to a pain assessment ruler) “The boy pointed at ‘2’ most of the time!”
“Well, his face itself tells one it is at least an ‘8’ (according to a pain pictorial assessment tool).

  1. These words mean so much and I think they are so true!

My father always suffering with back pain/sciatica would say, “pain is part of life but you can learn to live with it, and sometimes you have no choice, so you must accept it and make the best of it.” He’s the guy that sees the glass half full and would say, “Be thankful for all you have!” Let’s things roll off; a very brave man!

One time when very young having made a decision to move back to my home town from California I was chatting with him about my decision and wondered if I could have tried a different approach to things; because maybe I could have made something happen that would be worth it, and therefore maybe staying on that path would have been better for me after having already decided it was bad for me; I was second guessing my own decision. He just said to me; “you could be dead too.” He went on to say, “be thankful you are right where you are this minute, the past is the past and gone.”
